Ambalavanar Girls Home - Sri Lanka
Hosanna, King Jesus
High up in the mountains of Sri Lanka it is cool weather. This is where the tea is grown which is called "Ceylon Tea". It is so beautiful there that many rich people come here from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, in order to enjoy the cooler weather and the emerald views. What could possibly spoil this beauty. If only we would look a little further. Just a little further...
Then we would see...

Take a good look at the lady who is picking the tea and tell me: "Do you think she wants to do this work forever?"
Take a look at the man who is crushing the stone. Does he seem to be saying:"Oh I am enjoying this"? They would tell you it isn't so. They are not doing this of their own free will. They are practically slaves...
They are not allowed to leave the plantations, not allowed to get higher education, not allowed to have property, not allowed to work elsewhere, not allowed to do most things people in the free world are allowed. One thing that they are allowed is to die and this happens sometimes. When that happens the question is; what happens with their children? For these children, we have set up orphanages. They are not allowed to leave either. We want to take them to better orphanages, but the police won't let us.

Actually, what we can do for these children is to purchase some land for them. Did I tell you that the rich come to take their vacation here? Well, that makes the property more expensive than elsewhere and so we need a lot of money. Actually, close to $45,000 for a piece of land for these 22 girls we are trying to help. These are smart girls. When we have church services, they are among the few children that can read. That is because we have been teaching them. The children of the other workers often don't get this kind of education. We want to give them the best. But now our rented home is not going to be rented out again. We don't have another place and time is running out. Will you help us?
Who are we?
We are the "Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India". These people you see are people who have been brought here from India in order to work on the plantations, many years ago. This is the third or fourth generation of slaves. We try to help these people. We get no help from the government as they would rather see that this not be known. But we need a place for these children, so we cry out to you. These people earn about a dollar a day. They cannot afford it.
Will you help?
